There is Growth Going On in Eastern Kentucky.

Corn is ready for picking. Cucumbers are becoming pickles. And Appalachian Roots has become Appalachian Roots INC. Yes, we have decided that the work we are doing to build a healthy, secure Appalachia is important enough to go to the next level. So on August 2nd, we registered with the State of Kentucky and the IRS as a non-profit formed to support community development through agriculture.

Now comes the interesting part – formation. Over the next several weeks we will be working on defining Appalachian Roots Inc. We need to draft and approve by-laws, apply for tax-exempt status with the IRS, and secure a Board of Directors. The initial Board consists of Bonnie Hale, Todd Howard, and myself, but our hope is to have an elected Board of Directors by the first of 2014. All of this work can be done by small committees and brought to the larger group for approval. To that end, we are looking for people with experience in non-profit formation to head these committees and people who want to gain that experience to assist. Is that you?

If you are interested, please send an email to growappal@hotmail.com or attend our monthly meetings, at 5:30 PM the second Thursday of each month at the Floyd County Extension Service, Prestonsburg. This group is not limited to Floyd County. We are Appalachian Roots, Inc working together for the health and well being of all Appalachia.
